We previously sat down with Jack Kalb, CPA and Partner at Toronto based recruitment firm Minted Search Group to chat about recruiting for accounting and finance roles. As a follow up, Jack is sharing his top tips for getting the best results when working with recruiters.

Come Prepared

When working with a recruiter, it’s crucial for both firms and candidates to have a rough idea of their goals. Having at least a general sense of what you want to achieve allows recruiters to tailor their efforts to meet your specific needs.

For firms, knowing your hiring and organizational objectives helps recruiters find the best talent to match your company’s goals. Whether your focus is on filling immediate roles or developing a pipeline for future leaders, clarity on your objectives is key.

For candidates, understanding career objectives enables recruiters to customize their search to properly fit aspirations. Even if candidates have long-term goal but are unsure about the steps needed to achieve it, that’s completely fine—recruiters can help identify the necessary steps. For more immediate, short-term goals such as benefits and skill development, recruiters can support in those areas as well.

Be Transparent

Honest communication is essential when working with a recruiter, whether you’re a firm looking to attract new talent or a candidate seeking your next role.

For firms, transparency about compensation packages, job requirements, and organizational culture is crucial. This openness helps attract candidates whose expectations align with what you offer, ensuring a better fit and more harmonious working relationships from the outset.

For candidates, we encourage them to share their salary expectations, preferred locations, and any other non-negotiables right from the start. This level of transparency allows recruiters to quickly eliminate roles that don’t meet their criteria, saving everyone’s time.

Remember, our success is tied to yours. The more upfront you are with us from the beginning, the better the experience will be for everyone involved. By fostering honest communication, we can more effectively connect firms with the talent they need to thrive.

Research the Market

For firms, it’s important to ensure that your compensation packages meet market expectations. Staying competitive in salary and benefits is essential to attract and retain top talent. If you want to start conducting research into the latest salary and benefit benchmarks, you can check them out here.

We also encourage candidates to seek insight into companies or industries that interest them. This could range from identifying specific companies to expressing a general interest in particular sectors. It is also important for them to benchmark where they currently stand and where aim to be, to ensure goals are realistic.
